Organic and fair trade company Nui International (Australia) is expanding its range of coconut-based foods and cosmetics sourced from the South Pacific. It is also trying to spread the message that eating coconut oil will not increase cholesterol levels and that the saturated fats in coconut oil contain beneficial medium chain triglycerides.

Just released by Nui International is the Nui Organic Coconut Sugar, which has a low Glycemic Index (GI 35) and is high in minerals and amino acids like Glutamic Acid. Nui’s Miro Meyhart says the sugar comes from the nectar of the coconut palm flower and is crystallised.

“The Organic Coconut Sugar contains a lot of minerals and has a caramel flavour – it offers a full flavour and sweetness and is healthier than any other crystallised sugar out there,” he said. “You can use the same amount of organic coconut sugar you normally do in coffee and tea, for general cooking and baking, and we use it in our Nui chocolate bars.”

Nui’s Wild Harvest Virgin Coconut Oil offers a stronger coconut flavour and is ideal for smoothies and cooking. Mr Meyhart says that due to the cyclone in Fiji last year, stocks of ACO-certified coconut oil are limited. Nui is working with wild harvest producers in Vanuatu and the ACO on certification to have organic products available on the market later this year.
